A multitude of skills in aviation learning can be effectively practiced and understood without incurring the cost of an approved flight simulator. Some examples include mastering the GPS system, simulating instrument failures, perfecting pattern entry, familiarizing yourself with runway and taxiway markings, navigating airspace entry and avoidance, simulating engine-out scenarios, receiving visual feedback of the rectangular pattern, honing descent procedures, understanding VOR operations, mastering DG or HSI utilization, and optimizing autopilot usage.

**Use of a home flight simulator doesn’t count towards any simulator time under FAA regulations. The value in guided learning from a qualified flight instructor is to increase knowledge and reduce cost by learning things that don’t require an actual aircraft yet can be applied to flying.
